Just launched: Local journalism AI leaders to follow

We're building a list of thinkers, innovators and builders who are thoughtfully navigating AI's impact on local journalism. Here are some insights so far.

Simon Galperin and his team at the Jersey Bee built an AI tool that they used to publish thousands of news stories and daily newsletters with just one and a half editorial staff. The Baltimore Banner, led by managing editor Emma Patti, is using AI to better understand audiences, to identify opportunities relevant, personalized stories. Matt Boggie and the Philadelphia Inquirer are using AI for labor-intensive tasks such as scanning and analyzing archives to identify stories or monitoring, empowering smaller newsrooms to focus on connecting with community, and producing more and better stories.

Hacks/Hackers is creating a list of local journalism + AI leaders—thinkers, innovators, and builders navigating AI’s impact on newsrooms.

As newsrooms face new technologies and shifting business models, successfully integrating new AI tools is especially critical for local journalism, where fewer resources make innovation critical.

To help meet this challenge, Hacks/Hackers is surveying local journalism + AI leaders—thinkers, innovators, and builders for their insights about AI’s impact on newsrooms.

We’ve published a first group to follow, with more to come. Their replies highlight common themes in how technology is being woven into the daily work of informing communities.
