Now online: How publishers can survive the AI age
Plus a new report on AI adoption offering lessons for non-profit newsrooms
How publishers can survive the AI age: A chat with Cloudflare VP of Product Will Allen
In our most recent AI Real Talk session, Cloudflare VP of Product Will Allen discussed how publishers can navigate the AI age, as the internet shifts from search engines to "answer engines." This shift has drastically changed the "crawl to referral ratio," making it challenging for content creators who rely on referral traffic for monetization.
Will explains how new tools are allowing publishers to regain control over their content and consider new revenue models. For example, while previously trained AI models likely contain most internet content, the ongoing value lies in new, high-quality, real-time information.
New report on AI adoption offers lessons for non-profit newsrooms
At a time of faster-than-ever technological change and shifting revenue models, one bright spot in journalism is the continued growth and success of non-profit, digital-first newsrooms.
Still, they face challenges with capacity, particularly when it comes to adopting and implementing AI.
In a new report, Accelerating Generative AI for Nonprofits, philanthropist and innovator Mark Zitter and researcher Devi Thomas explore how non-profits are navigating these pressures, offering lessons that apply to journalism.
Drawing on interviews with 25 non-profit leaders, funders and AI trainers, the report finds that many non-profit teams spend significant time performing repetitive tasks. Yet when it comes to adopting time-saving tools such as generative AI, hesitation, ethical concerns and fears of bias or depersonalization often hold organizations back. Training options tend to be too commercial or too time-intensive for smaller organizations, keeping them in “survival mode.” At the same time, several interviewees highlight the transformative potential of AI.
